Important fish habitat was lost in Fishtrap Creek when the stream reach
above the highway bridge was straightened in a Department of
Transportation highway project done years ago.
In
2004, seven pools were restored along this 800 foot reach of Fishtrap
Creek. The restoration was elegantly simple and low cost. It consisted
of digging pools in the existing channel and narrowing the stream
channel with excavated material. Fishtrap Creek has colder water than the
mainstem of the Big Hole River; therefore restoring pools in this reach
provides critical thermal refuge to all species of fish, including
fluvial Arctic grayling. Thermal cover and refuge are particularly
important during drought years.
