Big Hole River Restoration Feasibility Project

The goal of the Big Hole River Restoration Feasibility Project is to generate a stream habitat restoration plan for the seven-mile reach of river between Rock Creek Road and Highway 43 Bridge in the town of Wisdom, MT.  This reach of river is considered critical to the local fluvial Arctic grayling population for spawning and juvenile rearing.

The stream has been subjected to heavy grazing pressure from cattle and wildlife since the mid 1990's (OEA Habitat Inventory Report 1995).  The subsequent loss of riparian vegetation has caused stream bank instability, increased width-depth ratios, and a reduction in pool habitat quality.  The landowner has agreed to allow Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) to generate and implement a restoration plan for this stretch of river as part of their CCAA site-specific plan.
